The quick response of different police units on the Costa del Sol was very important in stopping the suspected shooter from getting away after the deadly shooting in Marbella yesterday, Friday October 3rd. Thanks to multiple witnesses who called the emergency authorities right away, they had a critical piece of information: the number plate number of the car used in the escape.
So “Operación Jaula” (Operation Cage) began. The National Police and Local Police in the vicinity were told to block all exits so that the gunman couldn’t get out of town before they had a chance to flee. Sources close to the issue have tsaid that Marbella was almost completely shut down because of this deployment.
The car was stopped near one of the entrances to the coastal highway, close to the Real de Zaragoza housing complex, after just a few minutes. The 38-year-old suspect had no choice but to let authorities arrest him.
The deadly shooting took place on Calle José Banús, which has a lot of cafés and restaurants, at about 2:35 p.m. According to sources, the events happened in this order: the alleged gunman was in a car and got out when he observed his target talking on the phone on the terrace of a store. He travelled about 10 metres on foot, and when he got close to the victim, he pulled a gun out of the back of his jeans.
He is said to have shot at least six times at the other man, who was 25 years old. The shooter raced back to his car and drove away, while the other person, who was badly hurt, ran inside to hide. Witnesses quickly called the emergency services, and several of them even remembered the car’s license plate number before it drove away.
Several units of the National Police and Local Police got to the scene swiftly, together with a 061 health emergency medical team. They took the hurt victim to the Costa del Sol Hospital, where he died later in the afternoon.
“It’s a miracle I didn’t get shot.”
“I went to get a coffee, which I do all the time, and it’s a miracle I didn’t get shot because I walked faster,” a witness and worker in the neighbourhood said. He said he was barely a few metres away from the shooter when he started firing.
The sound of gunfire immediately made many in the surrounding scared. “People started to run,” he claimed, scared that one of the bullets would hit them. “It sounded like a very powerful weapon; there were six or seven shots.” The person who did it then ran away.
“It’s not the first time something like this has happened here,” added the witness, who was still shocked by the gunshot in broad daylight.
