Ons Friday night, October 4th, an 82-year-old woman named Margaret was found dead in her home in El Portús, Cartagena.
Around 11:15 p.m., the emergency services were called to the scene of the incident. A neighbour called to say that a woman had died. An ambulance was sent to the complex, but the paramedics could only confirm that the person had died. The Guardia Civil and the coroner on duty were also called and sent to the scene.
The body stayed in the house until the judge said it could be taken away. The neighbour’s body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Murcia, which has a branch in the port city, so that an autopsy could determine if this individual died in a violent way.
Waiting for the body to be examined
The Guardia Civil, the group in charge of the probe, will wait for the coroner’s report before moving forward. Their first guess is that the woman died from lack of air.
A death can be purposeful, accidental, or homicide, and detectives need to make sure it wasn’t a violent death. Right now, all ideas are possible.
Margaret had lived at the campsite with her husband, Collin, for decades. He was also in his nineties. When the body was found, Collin was at home. The Guardia Civil wrote down everything he said so they might learn more about what happened in the residence.
“I was forced to do something”
Some others who live there said that this 80-year-old woman “was forced” to leave her home. Neighbours in the area said that just a few days ago, this woman and her husband met with people from the corporation that owns the complex again. During that discussion, the neighbours said again that they would not leave their home.
These neighbours are trying to connect Margaret’s death to the stress they say she was under. They say that the woman killed herself. But sources in the Guardia Civil say that the probe is still in its early stages and that no explanation can be ruled out. It’s important to note that a number of people who lived near the campground filed complaints against it for coercion, but all of those cases were closed.
“Rally for Collin”
After the woman died, the Cala Morena Association (ACM) asked everyone to come to a rally in support of Collin and a public outcry today, Sunday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the main entrance of Cala Morena, adjacent to the El Portús campsite.
The organisation said, “The goal is to support Collin, honour Margaret, and demand justice and accountability for what happened.”
“Margaret and Collin screamed out for aid. They wanted justice. Nobody paid attention. The group said, “This death cannot go unpunished.”
