The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has released new information that shows that boys in the province of Alicante are no longer named Jose, Antonio, Francisco, Manuel, or Vicente, which were the most common names in the 1930s. Boys are now called Alejandro, Daniel, Marc, Manuel, Martín, Hugo, Leo, Mateo, Lucas, and Enzo. Pablo, Mario, Adrián, Oliver, Álvaro, Luca, Marcos, Thiago, Liam, and David round out the top 20.
Alicante parents picked Sofía, Lucía Martina, Aitana, María, Emma, Valeria, Julia, Mía, Carla, Vega, Alma, Sara, Daniela, Carmen, Olivia, Paula, Lola, Alba, and Chloe as their girls’ names between 2020 and 2023.
Liam is a name that is becoming more popular in Alicante
When it comes to boys, Liam stood out the most because he hadn’t been in the INE data until now, but now he seems to be making a big splash. He is also one among the most popular names in the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona, Álava, Ourense, Las Palmas, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in addition to the province of Alicante.
Liam is an Irish name that comes from Uilliam, the Gaelic counterpart of William, and Guillermo in Spanish. William comes from Germanic roots. The wil portion means “will” or “desire,” while the helm part means “protection,” “helmet,” or “defence.” So, based on its roots, it might mean “determined protector” or “will to protect.” In English-speaking countries, William has led to short forms or variations like Will, Bill, Liam, and so forth.
It’s a short name that parents in Alicante are starting to choose more and more. Liam Neeson, Liam Hemsworth, and Liam Garrigan are some well-known actors who have this name.
