The Guardia Civil has broken up an international crime ring that stole and faked expensive cars in Italy and Spain, then sent them to Belgium to be sold in the United Arab Emirates.
The Guardia Civil say that nine people have been arrested in Italy on charges of stealing and counterfeiting 90 luxury cars worth more than €18 million. They further say that they were able to launder more than €2.5 million using a complicated cryptocurrency network.
The investigation started in October 2024, when the Italian Carabinieri in the Reggio Emilia region worked with Europol to find out that there was a criminal group in Italy that stole and forged premium cars. The research showed that this group also did illegal things in a number of cities in the province of Málaga and that they used the same methods of crime in both Italy and Spain.
The gang members travelled to numerous locations on the Costa del Sol in Spain to look for the most unique cars on the market. Once they had chosen the cars, they quietly put geolocation devices in them so they could see where each one was at all times.
