The Walking Football World Nations Cup, which many has been looking forward to, starts today, Tuesday, October 21st, in Torrevieja. This is the start of an exciting week of international play. The first part of the competition will be for women over 40, men over 70, and men over 50. The matches will carry on until Friday, October 24th, which is the day of the finals.
The event will take place at the Torrevieja Sports City and will bring together teams from all over the world to participate in a friendly, sports-filled atmosphere that includes walking football, which is becoming more and more popular.
WOMEN OVER 40
The women’s over 40 competition starts with a group stage, which will be a tough set of games. The first game of the tournament will be between Japan and the host country, Spain. This will set the tone for an entertaining week. In the first round, England vs. Australia and France vs. Czech Republic are two other matches that everyone are looking forward to. Wales will play for the first time in the second round of matches. The semifinals will have the top four teams from this stage.
MEN’S 70 AND OVER
There are now two sets of four teams in the men’s over 70 category. England plays the Netherlands and Japan plays Italy in Group A. In Group B, Canada will play France and Australia will play the Basque Country. After the group round, the teams will move on to the quarterfinals. The places in the quarterfinals will determine who plays who in the semifinals.
FOR MEN OVER 50
Men’s Over 50 is the most competitive category of the week. There are 18 countries in this category, split into three groups. England (world No. 1), the Czech Republic (world No. 2), and Spain (the host country) are the top seeds.
Group A: England, Australia, the Basque Country, Singapore, Italy, and Scotland
Czech Republic, Canada, Jersey, Cyprus, Morocco, and Japan are in Group B.
Spain, Rwanda, France, Wales, Nigeria, and Portugal are in Group C.
The top two teams in each group and the two best third-place finishers will move on to the quarterfinals.
As we move through the first week, interest is building both at home and throughout the world. Torrevieja is once again becoming a proud centre of worldwide walking football. Tuesday, October 28th, will be the start of the second week of the tournament.
