In the first few weeks of October, the National Police arrested 13 people in nine different operations for 13 home and business robberies that were solved in Alicante. One of the people who was detained hurt himself while trying to get away and fell from the second floor. Another thief tried to trick the police while walking his hunting dog, but he was caught and reported because the dog wasn’t muzzled. In a lot of these cases, the police needed help from the public to get to the scene quickly and catch the burglars. The people that were arrested are between the ages of 17 and 46 and are from Spain, Algeria, and Morocco.
Around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18th, a 44-year-old burglar hurt himself when he jumped from the second storey of a building in the Juan XXIII Segundo Sector neighbourhood. An alarm company’s dispatch centre called the National Police’s 091 dispatch centre to let them know that at least one individual they didn’t know was inside a residence they had broken into to steal.
When the officers on duty got there, they saw someone going down the front of the building from the first storey to the first floor. The robber saw the police and ran away through a different door on the second level.
The police tried to get in through the front entrance of the building, but when it was locked, one of them went to the back of the building to cover other possible escape routes. People saw the guy fall from the second floor, and even though he was hurt, he was still able to escape away.
But the escape didn’t continue long since someone saw him lying on the ground behind his building and called the cops. When they got there, the cops saw that he had injuries, including a cut on the back of his head, so they phoned for medical services. The police took the hurt thief to the hospital, where they kept him in detention while he healed.
On October 1st, the National Police detained a 46-year-old male who had broken into a house in the San Agustín neighbourhood just before 2:00 p.m. The security system in the house took a picture of him. The alarm went off, and the police were called. When they got there, they saw that the lock had been broken. They looked around the area and saw someone walking a dangerous breed dog. The police were able to identify and arrest the man because his characteristics matched those in the alarm company’s picture. The police in the area were also told, and they reported him for walking the dog without a muzzle. The dog was then transported to the Alicante Animal Shelter.
At 2:00 a.m. on October 3rd, police detained a 20-year-old Spaniard and two Moroccans, ages 23 and 34, when neighbours saw them breaking into a house. The police got there right away and caught the robbers in the act, knocking on the door to get in.
That same morning, police apprehended a 33-year-old Spaniard for breaking into a phone store close to the Gran Vía retail centre. The store’s alarm went off, and when police arrived, they found the burglar hiding beneath a desk in the main office. The man used a mask and a bucket hat to try to hide his face from security cameras.
A 17-year-old Algerian child was arrested early on October 4th after being seen knocking on the gate of a company in downtown Alicante and then running away. Also, on October 11th at about 2:00 p.m., neighbours of a building near the Central Market saw a 44-year-old Algerian male messing with a house lock and phoned the National Police.
Around 5:00 p.m. on the 13th, police arrested two Spaniards, one 35 and one 46, and one Algerian guy, 34, for breaking into a house in El Pla. The men who were arrested said they had rented it, but the owner maintained this wasn’t true and that the house was a gift from his mother. On October 14th, a 29-year-old Algerian man was detained in the Carolinas after climbing over the front of a home to steal from it. When neighbours questioned him, he tried to run away. On October 15th, a 25-year-old Algerian man was finally caught in a warehouse in Pla de la Vallonga.
