The Guardia Civil’s chase of a drug boat has prevented a load of hashish that four people who are thought to be traffickers were trying to bring into the Cadiz coast near Chipiona. Agents from the Comprehensive External Surveillance System (SIVE) saw a boat going in a strange way and sent out an alarm. The Guardia Civil said on Friday, October 24th, that two high-speed boats from the armed forces acted quickly to make arrests and take 1,700 kilogrammes of hashish.
After the SIVE alert, two patrol boats went to check out the suspicious boat. A chopper from the military joined the chase from the sky. While hovering over the ship, it saw that it was really hauling bundles of burlap and fuel cans. After some initial manoeuvres to get closer, the crew of the drug boat realised they had been found and ran away.
They weren’t by themselves. Two other vessels tried to help the boat transporting the bales and stop the Guardia Civil from doing their job. But it didn’t work. The cops were able to stop the drug boat from moving forward after working together with the Guardia Civil on the ground and in the helicopter.
The boat that was confiscated was 15 metres long and had four 350-horsepower motors. It was transporting 1,700 kilos of hashish. The police have taken all four of its crew members into custody.
Hours later, SIVE officers saw a group of people storing fuel canisters on land near Aguadulce beach in Rota. Once the patrols on duty were told about it, they got to the area and were able to take 114 fuel canisters, plus ten more that they had already put on an abandoned inflatable boat.
Guardia Civil officers from SIVE, the Provincial Maritime Service of Cádiz, and the Civil Guard’s Air Unit in Rota were in charge of the operation.
