The Elda Local Police caught someone who was spotted throwing building debris in waste containers near the hospital. Officers were patrolling the neighbourhood when they saw a man unlawfully dumping rubbish on Calle Malva.
They also noticed that the car he was using to carry the trash didn’t have a valid vehicle inspection (ITV), so they punished him for that as well.
The Elda Local Police drone squad doesn’t just monitor the area; they also use their drones to watch people at random times. These tools let them keep an eye on places where people often dump trash illegally and catch them in the act.
Police officers, with the help of patrol cars, inspect these places often during the day and even at night. The checks happen in several places, like at Monóvar Station, near La Melva Secondary School, and on Calle Sax, which are all places where trash is often dumped illegally. They are also looking for other places where trash may have already been dumped so that the company they hired can pick it up.
When officers see someone doing this, the Elda City Council starts the process of opening a sanctioning file for an act that is considered a serious crime under the Civic Responsibility and Coexistence Ordinance. The fine for this crime can be up to €1,500. It is a crime to dump large things or rubble, unless it is only a tiny amount.
Silvia Ibáñez, the Councillor for Citizen Security, said, “This kind of surveillance is done to catch people red-handed dumping trash, plastics, household goods, chemicals, pruning waste, and any other trash that should be thrown away in the Ecopark.”
Residents can transport their trash (rubble, scrap metal, plastics, and other rubbish) to the Ecopark, which is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Residents can drop off furniture, appliances, and other big things at the Ecopark for free. They can also drop off up to 2 m³ of rubble or construction trash and up to 3 m³ of garden waste.
