The Parks and Gardens Department of Benidorm City Council has spent about €150,000 on a number of projects to make public parks safer and easier to take care of. The main things these initiatives have done are replace broken park furniture, put up new wooden perimeter railings, and add new swings, outdoor workout equipment, and shaded areas in places where kids and elderly like to hang out.
José Ramón González de Zárate, the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, went to several parks this morning to check on the work being done. He went to the Rincón de Loix park, which is where Avenida Bélgica and Beata María Sufragio Orts meet, the Séquia Mare, the Foietes park, and El Moralet.
The councillor said that the maintenance work has mostly been about making new covered places in parks that are popular with kids and older people, such Rincón de Loix, which features swings and outdoor workout equipment. The wooden fence there, which had gotten worse over time, has also been taken down. New obstacles have also been put up in other places, such as El Moralet, Foietes, and Séquia Mare. González de Zárate said that additional swings have also been put up in the Els Tolls region “for children aged 0 to 14.” He also said that the work will be done by the middle of the month.
González de Zárate remarked, “This government thinks about people of all ages, but in these cases we focus on the youngest and the oldest so that they have the best chances and choices to play sports and spend their free time in safe and welcoming places.”
The councillor said that the money set out for these tasks is about €150,000. The Els Tolls neighbourhood park will get about €50,000 for new swings, another €50,000 for making shade structures at Rincón de Loix, and fixing and putting up new perimeter fences. About €15,000 will go to making new safety zones for young children. The councillor said, “This amount does not include labour costs.”
The head of Parks and Gardens told everyone that the city has a maintenance contract for all of its parks and that “action is taken at all times.” He also said that next year there will be more money to keep things up to date and replace those that have become old or need to be changed because of new certifications.
