National Police officers have arrested a 26-year-old man in Alicante as the suspected perpetrator of a crime of falsely reporting a crime and fraud. The person who was arrested lied when they said they had been the victim of a violent robbery so they could get €800 from insurance, which was the worth of a laptop that had been stolen from their car a few days before.
Someone reported a violent robbery using the “snatch-and-grab” tactic, which sparked the investigation. The victim said that while he was strolling down the street, two males came up behind him, grabbed his laptop, which was worth 800 euros, and ran away quickly, avoiding the police.
In response to what was reported, the police took responsibility of the investigation. After doing a lot of work, they confirmed that the events did not happen as the complainant said they did and that there was no robbery with violence.
After the investigators had their doubts, they asked the complainant to give them a new statement. In the end, he admitted that what he had said in his complaint was not true. He said that he had made everything up so that he could get the right amount of money from his insurance. But what really happened was that a few days before, someone broke into his car and stole his laptop after forcing open the back door. Since his insurance didn’t cover this type of theft, he decided to file a complaint about a robbery with violence so he could get the money.
He was arrested for the offences of submitting a fake police complaint and fraud after admitting that the events he stated were not true. The matter was sent to the Duty Magistrate’s Court in Alicante.
If you file a fake claim that you were the victim of a crime, you could be charged with both simulating a crime and fraud.
In the province of Alicante, many people are arrested for this crime of simulation. Most of the time, the people who file complaints say that their latest generation mobile phones were stolen, when in fact they were not stolen or lost, or they say they were victims of a robbery with violence in order to get insurance money.
The police are investigating the reported events. If the complaint is false, the complainant could be arrested for simulating a crime and even fraud, which would create police and criminal records that could have serious effects on their personal life.
