Two drivers who went the wrong way on the A-7 motorway on the same day are being looked into by the Guardia Civil. In two different occurrences, they almost caused serious accidents. Thanks to the quick action of the cops, neither of the two occurrences resulted in any crashes with other cars.
The first incident happened about 3:50 a.m. on Saturday, October 25th. Several reports told the police of a car going the wrong way on the Alicante-bound lanes near kilometre 434 in Muro de Alcoy, headed towards Valencia. The Valencia Traffic Subsector and the Muro de Alcoy Local Police worked together to stop the vehicle at kilometre 427, which could have led to a deadly outcome.
One person had roughly four times as much alcohol in their system as the other, who ignored the authorities’ signals.
The Xàtiva Traffic Unit gave the 45-year-old motorist a breathalyser test, which showed that his blood alcohol level was approximately four times the legal limit. He is being looked into for two crimes against road safety: driving while drunk and driving carelessly.
The second event happened hours later, at 10:40 a.m. The Road Accident Investigation Team of Xàtiva saw a car making a U-turn at the beginning of the acceleration lane of the A-7 at km 409.700. The 79-year-old driver went the wrong direction, ignoring the police vehicle’s audio and visual signs.
Because the situation was so urgent, one of the officers had to get out of the patrol car, cross the central reservation, and tell the driver to stop on the side of the road to avoid any more problems. The man is being looked into for driving carelessly.
Prison time and loss of driving privileges
The Guardia Civil wants everyone to know that the Penal Code says that driving while drunk can get you three to six months in jail, a fine or community service, as well as having your driving licence suspended for one to four years. For irresponsible driving, the punishments can be up to six years without a licence and two years in prison.
The case has been transferred to the Onteniente Duty Court.
