On Friday, November 21st, a man was sentenced to four years in jail for driving cocaine and hashish in his car and leading police on a chase through the streets of Alicante and Mutxamel. During the drive, he hurt two police officers who were trying to apprehend him. The plea deal cuts the prosecution’s initial request in half. They had asked for seven and a half years in prison for offences against public health, assaulting a police officer, careless driving, and causing harm. The Tenth Section of the Provincial Court came to an agreement on Friday, just before the trial was set to start. The defendant admitted guilt to the counts against him, and in exchange, the prosecution lowered his sentence.
On July 26th, 2023, the man who is now facing charges ran a red light on a roadway in Alicante. A police patrol car that was driving by and saw the crime told the man to stop. The driver, on the other hand, ignored the directions, sped up quickly, and ran away, putting both other cars and people on the road in danger.
The Public Prosecutor said that during the chase, the man drove too fast, went into the lane of oncoming traffic multiple times, and almost hit several automobiles. The chase concluded in the nearby town of Mutxamel, when the suspect left the car and tried to get away on foot, but the police caught him. During the fight that followed, he fought back hard, kicking, hitting, and elbowing, which hurt two police officers.
Packages were threw from the car window
The defendant threw two packages out of the car window while they were on the way. The prosecution says that these shipments had 87 grammes of cocaine and three kilogrammes of hashish, all ready to be sold to other people. The court believes that the defendant accepted to drive the narcotics in the car because he was addicted to them, as this agreement says.
The plea deal obtained at trial involves a total term of four years in prison: three years for drug trafficking with the mitigating circumstance of drug addiction, six months for assaulting a police officer, and another six months for driving recklessly. He also had to pay four euros a day for a month (180 euros total) for hurting the two officers. The judge also said that he couldn’t drive for two years. After the agreement, the punishment was read aloud in the courtroom. The defence asked for a suspended sentence so that the defendant wouldn’t have to go to jail, but the court needs to look at this request to see if it is genuine.
