The construction to add on to and update the Marina Baixa Hospital in Vila Joiosa is going according to plan and should be done by the end of 2026. The centre will have 41 more beds when it is done.
Marciano Gómez, the Minister of Health, visited the hospital this Friday, November 21st, to check on the progress of the work. While there, he also met with Beatriz Massa, the new manager of the Marina Baixa Health Department, and the leaders of the different services.
Gómez said that the construction business has confirmed that the first of the three planned phases would be finished by the end of 2026. The hospital will have 41 new beds ready at that time.
The councillor remembered that the Conselleria had to change the project that was planned in the last legislature to add an extra story, which would bring the total number of hospital beds up to 113.
Gómez said, “This way, we have kept the project from falling short from the start.” With this addition, the hospital will go from 285 to 398 beds.
The budget has also gone up from 57 million euros to 102.6 million euros. This is to make sure that the centre has a working plan that offers great healthcare for everyone in Marina Baixa.
The redevelopment plan involves a second phase that will add a new level to each block to make room for the new inpatient spaces that will hold the 113 extra beds. The third phase will include remodelling the ground floor and other parts of the hospital that are already there.
Gómez said again that the Consell is committed to making sure that “the residents of Marina Baixa can enjoy modern facilities that meet their needs as soon as possible, because we are working to give them the healthcare they deserve.”
Twelve operating theatres
The plan for the project includes a new building with six blocks that are linked to the current hospital by hallways at different heights.
The new healthcare sections have an Emergency Department with a short-stay unit, diagnostic imaging with two CT rooms, magnetic resonance imaging, radiology, and mammography.
There will also be a new ICU, an obstetrics facility for gynaecological emergencies, and a sterilisation centre.
There will also be a surgical block with twelve operating rooms, an outpatient surgery unit, and a recovery room for people who have just had anaesthesia.
