On Sunday, November 23rd, in Torrevieja, there was an accident that scared a lot of people but didn’t hurt anyone. A car caught fire after being hit from behind by another car. The event happened on the N-332, the busiest road in the area, just after 1 p.m. The firefighters from the Torrevieja fire station worked rapidly to put out the fire. The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) said that no emergency call was received, thus no medical help was needed at the scene. No other cars or people close were injured.
After the firefighters put out the fire, they had to relocate the car off the road so that traffic could start up again.
Possible causes
Everything suggests that the car caught fire after the fuel lines broke or the tank was damaged. This can happen when petrol spills and ignites from a spark, or when damaged wires cause electrical short circuits that make sparks.
Cars catching fire without being hit is more common in the summer. This is mostly because of electrical problems, leaks of flammable liquids, and engine overheating. The high temperatures outside make fluids evaporate and increase pressure, which can cause problems with cooling and braking systems, turning small problems into big fires.
