A National Police officer who was off duty and was allegedly attacked when he caught two young men trying to steal racing pigeons from a house in Vinalesa (Valencia) has died in the hospital where he had been since November 8th.
Sources in the Guardia Civil say that the officer, who had been in the hospital in severe condition since the incident, died on Tuesday. The Jupol union also posted on social media to say that he had died and to send their condolences to the family.
“Sadly, our coworker (…) has died. We will observe a time of strict mourning at the request of his family, to whom we send our deepest condolences during this extremely hard time. We are sad with you. The message says, “Rest in Peace.”
The Guardia Civil arrested a 21-year-old man and a 15-year-old youth for their claimed involvement in the assault. However, the youngster was let go after going to the Prosecutor’s Office.
The two were arrested in Burjassot after being recognised from a video image that showed them strolling down a street on the edge of Vinalesa following the attack on the policeman, who was said to have been hit in the head with a stone.
The judge of the Plaza number 2 of the Civil and Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance of Paterna ordered the 21-year-old to be held in temporary custody, communicated, and without bail, according to sources of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).
At first, the young man was being looked at for attempted murder or aggravated assault, but now that the officer has died, the charge will change. The minor was let go after going to the Prosecutor’s Office.
