The S-81 submarine “Isaac Peral” will arrive in Cartagena this Friday, November 28th, after finishing its maiden operational mission as part of NATO’s “Sea Guardian” deployment in the Mediterranean. The Spanish Navy says that the welcoming ceremony for the ship and her 55 crew members will be held at the naval arsenal at 9:30 a.m.
In the middle of October, the “Isaac Peral” joined the NATO mission to improve maritime security and fight terrorism in the Mediterranean.
Operation “Sea Guardian” includes many different activities that Maritime Security Operations are responsible for, like improving security capabilities, helping with situational awareness, and fighting terrorism.
The main goal of its efforts is to learn more about the maritime environment, including merchant traffic, communication lines, fishing areas, the rise of illegal activities, and improving the maritime security capabilities of the countries in the area.
If NATO agrees, it may do more things like stopping ships from entering certain areas, safeguarding freedom of navigation, stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction, and protecting important infrastructure.
