A gardener fell three metres while working in the Los Pérez neighbourhood of La Murada yesterday, Monday December 1st.
The worker was having trouble breathing after collapsing. He was taken by ambulance to Vega Baja Hospital after being treated by a medical team.
An accident on Avenida Doctor García Rogel in Orihuela in March killed a 48-year-old construction worker. Another worker, who was 47 years old, was treated for a possible broken hand and an anxiety attack.
Falls and impacts are the second most common cause of death at work, after heart attacks and strokes, which killed 169 of the 489 individuals who died in workplace accidents. According to the most recent numbers from the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, which keep track of workplace accidents—one of the worst problems in the labour market—up to last August, these are followed by entrapments and crushing injuries, which killed 54 people, and traffic accidents, which killed 52 people.

But there are fewer deaths and major injuries at work in Alicante. The agency led by Vice President Yolanda Díaz’s most recent report says that there were 12,554 workplace accidents in the first eight months of 2025. This is 4.5% fewer than the same time last year. The number of accidents that happened at work, which totalled 10,560, dropped the most, by 5.8%. The number of accidents that happened while commuting, which happened while going to or coming from work, dropped by 3.6% to 1,994.
There were 103 major accidents reported by the Labour Inspectorate, which was 8% fewer than in 2024.
In the meantime, the number of deaths during this time went up to 11 persons. Last year, 18 workers in the province died during the same time, which is a 38% decline.
Construction is still the most risky job, with a total of 1,757 incidents of all kinds, when looking at accidents that happen at work. Manufacturing comes next, with 1,613 incidences, and retail comes last, with 1,568.
There were also a lot of accidents in the transport sector, with 917 cases, and in the administrative activities and auxiliary services to businesses, with 911.
