A 52-year-old man fell into the water by mistake from the Alicante port promenade early Friday morning, November 28th, and drowned. Witnesses informed the police that the victim, who was homeless, seemed drunk and tried to swim to safety after falling into the water but failed.
At first, he couldn’t be identified because he didn’t have any papers with him, but the Scientific Police were able to figure out who he was later. He was a 52-year-old male.
The National Police were called about the deadly crash at 12:05 AM on Friday. Someone fell in the midst of the Paseo Mártires de la Libertad promenade in Alicante, across from the Explanada, and called Emergency Services. Police officers from the area and the country, as well as firefighters and paramedics, went to the incident.
Body floating
The victim’s body was floating face down, and after being pulled from the water, they tried to revive him, but they could only confirm his death.
The officers got statements from people who said the person who drowned was on the pier near to a cart with blankets and other personal items. He was acting drunk, and after getting up, he started walking in a strange way. Some others tried to stop him, but he fell into the harbour waters by accident.
Sources close to the case said that the man tried to swim to safety but failed and drowned.
This is the fourth death by drowning this year in the seas of the port of Alicante.
