Aena, the state-owned company that runs the airport, is making more improvements to the infrastructure at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport to make public transport run more smoothly. This means that a new parking lot for buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles (VTCs) will be built in front of Terminal 2. The main goal of the project is to establish a new waiting space to ease congestion in the area in front of the terminal building where passengers are picked up. The current location will only be used for dropping off and picking up passengers once this new facility is built. This means that it will only be used for short stops.
Aena has accepted the award agreement, which says that Quarto Proyectos will now build this new parking lot. The cost of carrying it out will be €815,146.79 (including taxes), which is less than the original bid price of €959,172.61. And, in principle, it should be up and running by summer, since the tender specifications say that the building should take seven months. The goal is to make it easier for passengers to get around, making their trips faster and more comfortable, both when they arrive at the terminal and while they are on their way to their final destination. In fact, the award agreement explicitly says that the work will be done by July, even though it hasn’t started yet.
The goal of the project is to build a special parking lot just for buses that are waiting for a long time. This way, they may stay there until their passengers arrive without taking up the restricted space in front of the terminal, where passengers now have a grace period to pick them up. This is meant to make public transport work better by stopping people from crowding in front of the terminal, where there isn’t much room and access is limited.

Stop people from getting in
The project also includes the installation of an entry control system with a barrier and licence plate scanner. This will assist in stopping unauthorised operations, such as those of “pirate taxis.” The goal is to make sure that only regulated bus lines, taxis with licences issued in Elche, and pre-booked chauffeur-driven transport services with the right permission are allowed to provide services. The project report says that “Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport needs better parking for scheduled buses, which means moving them to the bus bay area in S2.”

At the same time, it is said that “the dock needs to control who can come and go, so barriers will be put up for this reason.” The study says, “The goal of this project is to modify this parking area and storage facility to include a management, control, and payment system, in line with the AENA Management Committee’s guidelines of December 19, 2022.” And finally, it says that the goal is also to make “a specific area for ride-hailing services, so that this type of service can be accommodated, also controlling access and exits with barriers.”
