National Police arrested a 35-year-old fugitive in Benidorm (Alicante) who was wanted by British authorities on an international arrest warrant. He had fled the UK after being sentenced to life in prison for drug trafficking and weapons possession.
The U.K. asked for the order thinking that the man might have gone to the province of Alicante to avoid being caught by the police in his own country. Interpol sent the order to the police department.
Investigators started looking for the wanted individual to find out where he was and found him in Benidorm. In a statement, the National Police confirmed that they found and arrested him during a police operation.
The crimes happened in Newcastle, England, in 2020. The detainee was a “key member” of a criminal group that dealt drugs. Their job was to give orders to other members “in order to buy large amounts of drugs, oversee the transaction, and actively participate in the counting, storage, and delivery of the money for the purchase.”
The National Police say that the man “did his job under the direction of the head of the organisation and gave orders to lower-ranking members.” He is also accused of getting 34 kilogrammes of cocaine, which he sold to different buyers in the northeast of the UK, making cannabis, and keeping a semi-automatic weapon, all of which were discovered by police at a home in Newcastle.
After the police investigation, the detainee has been turned over to the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court (AN), which is responsible for handling the steps needed for his extradition.
