Alicante’s City Hall square now has a free Wi-Fi network. Citizens can access the new service using the ALC-WIFI network, after which they must agree to the user conditions and enter a phone number to obtain an SMS validation code to start the session.
The Councillor for Innovation, Antonio Peral, has announced that the PP government team is thus fulfilling “a new commitment” to “provide the Town Hall square with a free citizen access wifi network”.
He also emphasised that this network “is the one that has been offering free connectivity with the same system since last year at Santa Barbara Castle” and pointed out that to implement this service, it was necessary to install six repeaters spread throughout the area of the square, in order to allow “good” access to the signal.
Furthermore, the councilor stated, user rules and security standards have been devised to assure correct access to this municipal Wi-Fi network. The initiative aligns with agreements negotiated between the ruling People’s Party and the opposition Vox municipal group, as stated by the local government.
For his part, Vox councillor Óscar Castillo highlighted that this is another measure by his municipal group “fulfilled” in preparation for the 2026 budget negotiations and stated that the public wifi network in the “heart” of the city “is beginning to become a reality, pending other high-traffic areas.”
“Alicante could not be left behind as a tourist city and connectivity is a fundamental pillar to continue leading the sector in Spain,” he asserted.
How to access
Regarding the access method, the user must accept the previous agreement for the use of the Alicante City Council’s guest wifi network, which will appear on the device screen while accessing the network.
According to the Alicante council, this agreement includes the acceptance that the user must comply with local rules and laws and that a wireless device compatible with wifi and software must be used to access the service, and that the user must not use this service to browse pornographic pages or pages with illegal content, nor to download it.
By clicking the “accept” button, the user must fulfill one last requirement, which is to indicate a phone number where they will receive a validation SMS that they will have to write in the box provided on the screen next to the verification code, check the box to accept the terms of use and log in.
Once these processes are accomplished, users will be registered as guests of the City Council and will be able to access this Wi-Fi network in the square “free of charge.” This validation code will be saved, and the user will only need to log in each time they visit this service.
