For the first time in its history, the bus service in Elche has had 15 million passengers in one year. The Mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, along with the councillors for Public Services, Claudio Guilabert, and Rural Districts, Pedro José Sáez, and the manager of Avanza Elche, Ángel Luis Andreu, gave María Luisa Argente, the 15 millionth passenger, a voucher that lets her use the service for free for a year.
The Mayor said, “With these numbers, we have broken all previous records for the city’s urban bus service.” He went on to say that “in just one year, there are about 13.5 million passengers on the intercity service and 1.5 million users of the bus to outlying districts.”
Ruz talked about how this service has been put into place in the outer districts. He said it “has been a true revolution since January 27 of this year and has connected the municipality in a much more direct and effective way.” He also said that 2026 will be “the year of improvements in Mobility.”
The mayor also reminded everyone that all public transit in the city will be free on December 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th to ‘encourage mobility throughout Christmas’.
María Luisa Argente, the 15 millionth passenger, said she was surprised and thankful. She said she uses the bus “almost every day for daily errands and family trips.” She stressed that “we residents have noticed a big difference since the bus came to the outlying districts. Now there is a bus every 15 or 20 minutes, which saves me a lot of money.”
Pedro José Sáez, the councillor for outlying districts, said, “The bus service to outlying districts has always been a clear commitment of this government team to connect the outlying districts with the urban centre and in less than a year we are approaching one and a half million passengers on these lines.”
Claudio Guilabert, the Councillor for Public Services, said that “these concrete policies are what let us celebrate 15 million passengers here in Torrellano today.” He also said that “we are working on offering a night bus line for Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Three Kings Day to make the roads safer in the municipality.”
Lastly, Ángel Luis Andreu, the operations manager of Avanza Elche, said, “Today is a day of gratitude to the 15 million users who have trusted the urban bus service day after day.” He also said that the company is committed “to mobility and to continuing to improve connectivity throughout the entire municipality.”
