Today, Friday December 26th, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will start the second part of a special operation to keep an eye on and control roads during the Christmas season. This phase will remain until Thursday, January 1st. “These days, when a lot of us will be driving to see family and friends and celebrate the new year, we need to be extra careful when planning our trips. We need to know about the roads, the weather, and make sure we don’t drink and drive, because everyone’s life is at stake,” said Pedro Fernández, the delegate of the Government of Spain in Andalusia.
Times of the most traffic
Between December 26th and Thursday, the 1st, there will be a lot of short and long-distance car trips, especially on weekends and holidays, to second homes, big shopping centres, places to practise winter sports and other winter tourist attractions.
The DGT says that the best times to avoid traffic are between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on December 26th and 28th and between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday the 27th.
To keep the roads safe and handle the high volume of traffic, officers from the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Group, staff from the Traffic Management Centres, helicopter patrols, and people in charge of maintaining equipment and putting in place road safety measures will be working around the clock. Their goal is to make traffic flow better and keep everyone on the road safe.
Traffic Management Centres and the Traffic Group will get updates on traffic conditions during the flight. Their agents will do their normal jobs of helping people, keeping an eye on traffic, and providing assistance on the interurban network of Andalusian roads. They will pay special attention to roads that are expected to see a lot of traffic, like those that lead to tourist rest areas and second homes.
The Special Christmas Operation 2025-2026 contains three parts, each of which covers one of the busiest days of the holiday season: Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Three Kings Day.
The second phase starts now that the first phase, which ran from Friday, December 19th to 25th, is over. The third and final phase will span from Friday, January 2nd to Tuesday, January 6th, which is also Three Kings Day.
