The National Police have taken a 38-year-old man into custody in Marbella for allegedly being involved in a robbery at a jewellery store in a shopping centre in the town. Reports say that the suspect broke into a display case while the business was open to the public in order to steal four gold necklaces worth about €13,000. A patrol found and apprehended the suspect at a construction site near the shopping centre after he ran away on foot. In a press release, the National Police said that all of the jewellery had been found.
On Sunday, December 21st, in the afternoon, the burglary happened. An employee at the jewellery store said that the burglar came in acting like a customer. At one point, the robber took advantage of the fact that other customers were being helped to sneak up to the exhibit window and quietly break into the glass case, snatching four gold necklaces. A bystander saw the theft and told a store clerk, who then set off the alarm, which informed the police and the shopping center’s private security.
The robber ran away on foot, but he dropped part of his booty while running through the shopping centre. For example, a bystander who wasn’t engaged in the theft picked up two gold pendants worth €3,000 from the floor and gave them to the store manager. Security guards chased after him, and the suspect even threw a screwdriver at one of them as they tried to grab him outside the mall.
Based on what the thief said them and the escape route, two National Police patrols surrounded the outside of the big retail centre and found a man who fit the description of the robber. When the intruder realised he had been caught, he ran onto a construction site near the retail centre to try to get away from the police, but he wasn’t able to.
Finally, the patrols found the man, who was hiding in a corner of the building site, and detained him. He had a crowbar and three gold items with him: two pendants for €10,000, still with the price tag from the jewellery store where he had just committed the crime, and a diamond bracelet whose origin is still being looked into—it doesn’t belong to the jewellery store mentioned above. The police took the stolen goods back to the business, and the clerk showed them how the criminal had broken the display window rails. The display cases can only be opened with a specific magnet.
