Some people haven’t gotten their last pay cheque or the extra income they were promised for working holidays, nights, or extra days since August. This is the hard scenario that has made social workers and nursing assistants in public nursing homes in Alicante quite angry. “We have coworkers who won’t be able to pay their mortgages, buy gas, or even get through Christmas,” says Jorge Sánchez, who works at the Alacant centre for dependent older people, which is run by the Ministry of Social Services, Family, and Childhood. He said that 40 other workers, such nursing assistants, nurses, and kitchen assistance, are in the same boat. Unions like CSIF have also spoken out about the issue, saying that it affects the whole province. Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has also warned about the “critical” situation facing workers in centres for persons with disabilities and children’s homes.
Staff at this nursing home in Alicante say they are owed between 150 and more than 300 euros in “payroll” or supplemental payments, on top of their previous wage, because they say they haven’t been paid at all in December. And much less so their Christmas bonus.
The cause is “issues with managing payments.”
The regional ministry told the professionals that there have been “problems in payment processing.” But the people who are unhappy have gotten even more upset after getting an email from the Territorial Secretariat of Social Services telling them they can ask the bank for a salary advance without paying interest.
The workers say that the biggest problem is that it has become “commonplace” for them to have to wait longer than usual to get paid, just like what happened in December. “They told us that the computer system had changed and that a lot of us hadn’t been paid because the payroll wasn’t recorded. Then, in the summer, they told us that they weren’t paying us for July and August because the payroll person was on vacation,” they said.
