The Orihuela Criminal Court No. 3 has fined a beautician from Orihuela 100€ a day for a year for practising podiatry without a licence. This person was doing foot surgery at a beauty parlour without the right university degree or professional registration.
Official College
The legal team for the Official College of Podiatry of the Valencian Community (ICOPCV) was able to show that the convicted woman diagnosed onychocryptosis (an ingrown toenail) and hyperkeratosis (calluses) after examining the patient’s feet and taking their medical history. She then used sharp tools, like a scalpel, to remove them, gave the patient medication, and suggested a course of treatment.
The professional group also said on Monday, December 29th, that it had made suggestions for how to manage fungal infections and how to use a bunion splint.
Health competencies: “The public has to know that this beautician in Orihuela is doing podiatry work, which is part of healthcare, not aesthetics, which is all about making things look better. “This conviction has let us stop a crime that puts patients’ health at risk without their knowledge and is a step closer to stopping unqualified people from getting involved in podiatry,” said Maite García, a podiatrist and member of the legal committee of the College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community. We need to realise how important it is to only let healthcare specialists that specialise in feet take care of them, such university graduates in Podiatry. The same source said, “To make sure we are dealing with a qualified professional, we can ask for their registration number, which is needed to practice the profession.”
