The Crevillent Town Hall (Alicante) has said that it is “deeply sorry and sends its condolences” for the sad fire that happened Monday night, December 29th, in a home on Calle Al-Shafra and killed a 25-year-old woman. It has also designated a day of official mourning. A 33-year-old male is still in the hospital in bad condition after the same event.
The Mayor of Crevillent, Lourdes Aznar, declared Tuesday an official day of mourning. This is “a sign of respect and condolences to the victim and their family,” the City Council said in a statement.
The city decision meant a formal mourning period started at 8:00 a.m. and that the flags of Crevillent flew at half-mast on all municipal buildings all day. At noon in front of the Town Hall, there was a minute of silence.
The City Council has publicly offered “its institutional and human support to the family and friends of the victim in these moments of profound sorrow,” and they also wish the injured individual who is still in the hospital a “speedy and favourable recovery.”
The council has also praised the work of the Alicante Provincial Council Fire Consortium, health services, and the Local Police and Civil Guard, who were involved in the incident. They have also stressed how important it is for the municipality to support those who were affected by this terrible event that shocked Crevillent.
One person, a resident of the same building, has been arrested in connection with the fire. The Santa Pola Territorial Judicial Police Team now has the file and is in charge of the investigation. The Duty Magistrate’s Court in Elche has been told about the case and is still looking into it.
