The Alicante Provincial Police Station set up a security operation for New Year’s Eve and the hours running up to the New Year. It ended on Thursday morning, January 1st, with 21 arrests in the city of Alicante, 295 people recognised, and 51 cars searched. Police also gave out 20 tickets for having drugs and six more for carrying knives or other dangerous items.
According to the Provincial Police Headquarters, the New Year’s Eve evening in Alicante has been absolutely normal, “without serious or excessively disturbing events for the citizens of Alicante, thanks to the joint work between police forces.”
Deployment
The operation comprised sending officers from the Provincial Citizen Security Brigade to work with the other operational brigades and the North and Central District Police Stations in Alicante. The Local Police and the National Police’s Community Unit were also involved, with the 091 emergency contact centre coordinating everything.
One of the arrests stands out: a thief was caught after aggressively stealing someone’s wallet. He ran away on foot, but a nearby National Police patrol arrested him. Two more offenders were arrested for making serious threats after waving shattered glass bottles at a group of young children.
Two people were arrested for burglary in a different case. A witness called the 091 emergency number because a group of people were trying to break into a house. The National Police and the Local Police both showed up at the scene and found the two people they thought were responsible hiding on the top floor of the building. The suspects had several tools that they used to break into the building’s main gate and the flat door, but they couldn’t get in since the cops got there so quickly.
Three more persons were caught for another robbery with violence. Police say that a patrol unit from the Prevention and Reaction Unit, known as “RAYO,” saw three males throwing things away in the street. The police stopped them to ask where the things came from. A man who said he was the owner of the stolen goods came up to the officers at that point and told them that the three men had knocked him to the ground and fought with him a few minutes before to steal his things.
Also, people have been arrested for outstanding warrants, domestic violence, drug trafficking, and resisting arrest. There have also been humanitarian efforts, like giving medical help and asking for health services for people who were only semi-conscious and had drunk too much alcohol.
The places with the most people on New Year’s Eve, such as El Barrio, the Explanada de España, Rambla de Méndez Núñez, Alicante City Centre, the Port, Vistahermosa, and San Juan Beach, had the most security. The National Police said they are striving to stop crimes, notably property crimes, and to make sure that people in different neighbourhoods of Alicante may live together peacefully, especially during such significant holidays.
As for the National Police units that were involved in the operation, they sent patrol units from the Citizen Assistance Groups (GAC), which are always stationed in different parts of the city; the Operational Response Groups (GOR), which respond to specific problems in areas of special police interest and at times that might be more dangerous; and the Prevention and Reaction Units (UPR), whose job it is to restore public order.
On the other hand, the Mobile Brigade-Transport Police has also been strengthened to work at land transport facilities. Their main goals are to stop crimes from happening by both regular and specialised criminals, both when they arrive in the city and when they leave it.
