This winter is hard on all health departments in the Valencian Community when it comes to health. According to the Ministry of Health, flu cases dropped sharply in the last week of 2025. However, the start of 2026 has put more demand on all hospitals in the Valencian region. The hospital in Dénia has also been like this.
Union and healthcare sources say that as many as 25 patients were waiting to get into the Emergency Department at the Marina Alta hospital on Monday, January 5th. They were all waiting for a place to sleep. These same sources recognised that this has led to a new problem of overcrowding: “The Emergency Department is full, and the wards are full.”
There are a lot more people on the waiting list now (more than twice as many) than there were at the beginning of Christmas, when the Emergency Department had as many as twelve patients waiting for a bed.
But this healthcare failure has been a concern in the area for a few weeks now, ever since flu and other viral diseases started to spread. As early as the start of December, people had to wait up to 40 hours to get onto a ward at the hospital. Acute respiratory infections have expanded to the Marina Alta district, which is one of the most afflicted places in the Valencian Community. This has also had an effect on primary care.
