The Spanish National Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have worked together to fully break up a Spanish-Mexican crime group that was thought to be the main source of methamphetamine in Europe. This is the second part of Operation Saga, which led to the second-largest methamphetamine seizure in Europe. Nine persons have been detained and brought before the courts on charges of drug trafficking, being part of a criminal organisation, and money laundering. A member of the Sinaloa Cartel and a businessman who owns a marble company that was utilised to convey the drugs are among those who were arrested.
The National Court’s Investigating Court Number 6 started the investigation in 2023 with Operation Saga, which led to the recovery of 1,800 kilogrammes of methamphetamine. It turned out to be the second greatest seizure of methamphetamine in Europe. It broke up the major supply point for synthetic narcotics in Europe, which was based on Tenerife, Madrid, Valencia, and Alicante.
40 kilos of methamphetamine were stashed in a statue that was going to Tenerife.
After this operation, the agents found out that new members of the group in Spain and Mexico were trying to reorganise their finances.
at July 2024, this criminal group smuggled 40 kilos of methamphetamine to Tenerife. They placed it at the base of a statue that was more than 1.5 meters tall. The person who got the package, who turned out to be a well-known drug dealer from the island, was arrested right away.
In a Madrid flat, they paid 2,500 euros a month to stay quiet.
Last September, a member of the Sinaloa Cartel was found hiding in an apartment where he rarely left. He was paid 2,500 euros a month to stay quiet because he had helped bring in and keep the 1,800 kilos of methamphetamines that were seized in Alicante during Operation Saga.
The group also sent 38 kilogrammes of marijuana to Finland, but it was stopped. The recipient, who had gone to Finland just to get the drugs, was detained thanks to working with Finnish Customs.
There are over 3 million euros buried in a bunker.
They arrested two important people after looking into the matter multiple times. One was a businessman who utilised his legal marble company to smuggle the drug buried in stones that came from Mexico. A search of one of his warehouses found around €3,000,000 buried in a bunker below ground. The other arrest was of the head of the drug trafficking network, who was in charge of operations between Dubai and Mexico and the other members of the group.
Seven expensive watches, seven cell phones, geolocation devices, and other munitions were found during searches of seven homes in Valencia (2), Alicante (3), Malaga (1), and Madrid (1).
Nine persons were arrested during the operation on suspicion of being part of a criminal organisation, drug trafficking, and money laundering. Three of them were kept in jail. This operation effectively breaks up this criminal network, which officials say is the biggest in Europe for selling synthetic drugs.
