The National Police have arrested a 41-year-old man in the town of San Fulgencio. The UK authorities had filed an international arrest order for him for sexual assault, which may lead to a life sentence.
The fugitive had run away from a UK court after being given a life sentence for a sexual assault that happened between 2014 and 2015.
The country requesting the arrest sent an international arrest order to the National Police via Interpol. This was done because they thought the fugitive might have picked the province of Alicante as a place to hide from prosecution in his own country.
The investigators started looking for him for this reason, and they quickly found him in San Fulgencio. After a police operation, they found him and arrested him.
The police have turned the detainee over to the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court, which is responsible for carrying out the steps needed for his extradition.
There are hundreds of tourist and residential properties in this municipality, mostly at El Oasis and La Marina. More than 65% of the 9,500 registered residents of San Fulgencio are from other countries, and over 3,500 of them are British. In reality, this isn’t the first time the National Police have caught dangerous criminals with worldwide arrest warrants in this same city. Last October, they caught two Germans who were wanted by the authorities in their own nation.
What does it mean to have an international arrest warrant?
An international arrest warrant is a formal request from one country to another or to the international community (like Interpol) to find, temporarily arrest, and turn over a person wanted by the justice system. This lets police work together across borders to make sure the person goes to court, serves their sentence, or continues criminal proceedings for serious crimes like murder, fraud, or drug trafficking. In the European Union, for example, this is done through the European Arrest Warrant.
