A 39-year-old man in Alcoy was arrested by the National Police on suspicion of fraud and damage after he rented industrial buildings and plots of land to store dozens of tonnes of worn clothing and avoid paying for environmental management.
The owner of a warehouse and a piece of property leased to an individual who claimed to be involved in the buying, selling, and exporting of textiles filed a complaint, which sparked the investigation in Orihuela.
She made an unsuccessful attempt to get in touch with him and went to the warehouse to try to locate him after he neglected to pay the agreed-upon monthly installments. According to the National Police, she observed that the site was being utilised as a dump for used clothing without any control or order.
On the tenant’s orders, trucks arrived at the plot and unloaded a significant amount of used clothing. The warehouse owner discovered that the individual under investigation had charged third parties to handle the recycling of the used clothing, but in the end, he had abandoned it in various rented warehouses or plots after defrauding at least two other locals.
The victim calculated that removing all of the clothing from the plot for further treatment would require more than 50 trucks, at an approximate cost of 120,000 euros. The agents discovered during the investigation that the treatment of one tonne of used clothing by authorised companies costs between 100 and 200 euros, and the transportation of this clothing by trucks costs about 1,000 euros per truck.
The police are still looking into a potential environmental crime when they finally found and detained the suspect in Alcoy, where he is also accused of carrying out this behaviour.
The detainee was sent over to the Alcoy duty magistrate’s court.
