Physicians in the Valencian Community are urged to support a strike today Wednesday, January 14th and tomorrow, January 15th in order to seek better working conditions and compensation, as well as a separate law for medical professionals.
Apemyf, a platform that unites about 20 union and non-union medical organisations, called the strike. In addition to primary care doctors across the nation, the strike is planned for today Wednesday and Thursday in a number of autonomous communities, including the Valencian Community, Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Murcia, and Asturias.
“Promises are insufficient now.”
Avanza Medical Union, the Apemyf-affiliated organisation in the Valencian Community, stated on social media that the strike is the result of “years of excessive workload, long hours, lack of work-life balance, and a complete absence of dialogue.” “Promises are no longer enough,” they claim.
In addition to expressing their willingness to have a conversation, the union stresses that “we need verifiable commitments that guarantee a sustainable public healthcare system and decent working conditions for those who support it every day,” but they caution that “when a commitment is public, so is its fulfilment.”
Own laws and limitations on working hours
The development of a specific Medical and Professional Statute that captures the distinctive features of the field is one of their primary requests. They also insist that on-call shifts be considered as effective working time for retirement purposes, that there be reasonable restrictions on working hours, that rest times be ensured, and that on-call shifts and clinical work be fairly compensated.
Additionally, they seek professional classification and compensation that is appropriate for the clinical responsibility, training, and decision-making that come with practicing medicine. They also advocate for structural reforms, such as adequate staffing levels and working conditions that enable the public health system to retain talent, to address overwork and precarious employment.
