According to a statement from Police Headquarters, a 37-year-old male who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition (EAW) issued by the French authorities was taken into custody by National Police officers in the town of Elche, Alicante.
Since the French authorities had issued a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition (EAW) for a sexual offence against children since October of this year, the officers detained the man when he went to police headquarters to complete several administrative processes.
In addition to the 2025 crimes for which he was wanted, he is also accused of committing similar crimes in the French town of Montreuil between 2017 and 2021 that carry a 20-year prison sentence.
The fugitive appears to have escaped from French authorities following a sexual assault in October of 2025. Investigations conducted in the days that followed in an attempt to track him down revealed that the man who had been arrested had escaped from French authorities following the commission of the actions and was also responsible for other sexual assaults that took place between 2017 and 2021.
Following the police investigation, the detainee was turned over to the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court, which is responsible for completing the necessary steps for his eventual extradition.
