The Guardia Civil and the National Police, with help from the Local Police of Calafell, have finished a joint operation against the illegal growing of marijuana. Seven men between the ages of 26 and 33 were arrested, and several marijuana plantations were destroyed in the provinces of Alicante and Tarragona.
In September 2024, police from the Guardia Civil station in Muro de Alcoy found the remains of a big marijuana farm in the Sierra de la Safor mountain range, which is in the municipality of Lorcha, Alicante. The Civil Guard said in a press release that the plants were hidden in thick woods and could only be reached by walking across the Serpis River.
Nearby, the agents found a homemade hut with supplies for living on its own, as well as equipment, chemicals, and other things that were probably meant to help take care of cannabis plants.
Because of these incidents, the Guardia Civil Company of Ibi’s ROCA Team took over the investigation. They decided to leave the area as they found it so that the people who were growing the plants wouldn’t know that the plantation had been uncovered.
The investigators asked the Citizen Security Unit of the Command (USECIC) of Alicante for help in July and August 2025. This led to the discovery of hundreds of plants that could be used to grow marijuana in the wooded area, confirming their initial suspicion.
On September 2nd, the plantation was taken down, and the agents took about 3,000 marijuana plants, six kilogrammes of buds, and other things that helped them figure out who the suspects were.
These men lived in different towns in the province of Tarragona and had criminal records in numerous European nations for drug trafficking and violent robberies. They were also not allowed to enter the Schengen area.
It was learnt through different police coordination protocols that the Drug and Organised Crime Unit (UDYCO) of the National Police Station of Tarragona had been looking into these same people since the beginning of 2025 for growing marijuana in three single-family homes in high-income urbanisations in the towns of Calafell, Cunit, and Roda de Berà.
So, the Guardia Civil and the National Police worked together with the Calafell Local Police to form a combined investigation team. The Barcelona Reserve and Security Group Number Four, the USECIC unit of the Tarragona Command, the Organic Units of the Judicial Police of Alicante and Tarragona, the Local Brigade of the Judicial Police of the National Police Station in Reus, the Scientific Police of the Provincial Police Station in Tarragona, the Police Intervention Unit, and the Special Operations Group of Barcelona also helped.
After more than two months of work to find out who the suspected members of the criminal organisation were, seven raids were carried out on different houses in the towns indicated above in Tarragona on November 25th.
For this reason, a big police operation with more than 150 officers was put into action. During the searches, a hidden room was found in the basement of one of the houses that was supposedly used for growing marijuana. The room was set up as a lab with machines made just for drying, processing, and turning marijuana into hashish powder. The Civil Guard said it was “the first laboratory of its kind detected in the province of Tarragona.”
As a final outcome of the operation, seven males aged 26 to 33 were arrested, and three additional marijuana farms were shut down, along with the one that was already in Alicante.
Authorities seized a total of 4,300 marijuana plants, 12 kilos of buds, six kilos of hashish pollen, 2,000 euros in cash, an electroshock device, a fake gun, a frequency inhibitor, a car, and other items that were supposedly used to grow, process, and change the drug.
The people who were arrested and the things that were taken were given to the right court authorities, who ordered that all of them be released with safety precautions in place.
