The fall of a beam forced people to leave a four-story building with multiple businesses on the ground floor. The structure is located at number 1 Calle Almoradí, at its intersection with Calle Cortes Valencianas, in the town centre of Rojales. The building has ten flats and is currently being renovated for the first time by the residents’ organisation.
Around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 19th, the workers from the firm who were fixing up the building saw a beam on the front of the building fall and become overloaded. This happens when a segment of a structure has to hold more weight than it was meant to.
The order to evacuate was given right away, and the Local Police of Rojales, whose main station is next to the building that was impacted, immediately carried it out.
The property is about 45 years old. The land registration says that the building was built in 1980.
Overseeing
The rehabilitation company, the project management team, and the city engineers and architects have all been looking into the situation and figuring out how severe the damage is. The mayor of Rojales, said that the whole building has been shored up.
Affected
The people who were affected stayed in front of the building for most of the afternoon. They have since moved in with family or friends. The Rojales Town Hall has opened up two hotels in the centre of town as temporary housing for people who didn’t have any option.
Councillor Pérez did not say when the building will be evacuated or if the steps taken would let residents go back to their homes soon, but he did say that the firm and city personnel had been working all day to make it happen as quickly as possible.
