The Provincial Court of Alicante sentenced a man to five years in jail for attempted murder after he confessed to trying to kill a cab driver in Elda in 2023 and reached a plea deal with the prosecution.
The Alicante Court has issued a judgement of conviction “in voce,” ordering that the accused, who is still in provisional detention and for whom the Prosecutor’s Office considers the incomplete exemption of mental alteration, serve the rest of his sentence in the psychiatric module of the penitentiary centre where he is being held.
Around 5:00 p.m. on September 14th, 2023, in Elda, the defendant got into the cab and told the driver where he was going.
At one point during the race, while they were on a quiet dirt road, the defendant assaulted the cab driver out of nowhere and cut his face and neck with a sharp object, making him bleed a lot.
The taxi driver jumped out of the car to get away, but according to the Public Prosecutor, the accused went behind the wheel of the cab and drove over the victim, who required 462 days to heal from his injuries.
The prosecution said that the defendant was having hallucinations, perceptual problems, and a general decline in mental health at the time of the incidents. So, they used the partial defence of diminished culpability.
