This Thursday, there was another train accident on the Spanish railway network. This one was less serious than the others. The accident happened when the arm of a crane truck hit the narrow-gauge train (FEVE) that runs between Cartagena and Los Nietos in the Region of Murcia. At least six people were hurt, but they were all minor injuries.
The event happened a few minutes after noon near kilometre marker 6.6, which is between the villages of Alumbres and La Esperanza. Sources from the Government Delegation in the Region of Murcia said that a truck that was working in the region, but not for Renfe or Adif, hit the window of one of the train cars. The vehicle was apparently working on the electrical wiring of a private home when it crashed into the rails, which were in the airspace above the tracks.
Emergency services (112) say that there were 16 people on the train at the time of the accident, and at least six of them were hurt in a minor way. Four men and two women were hurt and transferred to the Santa María del Rosell and Santa Lucía hospitals in Cartagena. The Government Delegation said that two of these people needed treatment for anxiety episodes after the disaster.
Fernando López Miras, the president of the Region of Murcia, is in Madrid for the FITUR tourism fair. He confirmed on his social media account that the train has not derailed. The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has also said that it has not overturned and that no one is still on board. Francisco Lucas, the Government Delegate in Murcia, tried to calm people down and wished a quick recovery to those who were hurt.
The Government Delegation has confirmed that service on this line has been restored because the track was not damaged. The train that was in the accident has been transferred to the Alumbres station, so the line is clear and service is back to normal.
