The landing of 11 migrants from a speedboat on Los Muertos beach, near Carboneras (Almería) resulted in one fatality and another injury. According to sources close to the investigation, the boat approached the shore with at least 20 passengers, dropping them off along the beach before returning to sea. Upon arrival, the Guardia Civil discovered a body and a badly injured man, who was transported to Almería hospital. An additional 20 persons, including a minor, were recovered in good condition.
According to public agency sources, the 112 Andalucía emergency service received a contact shortly after 10 a.m. regarding a speedboat near Lancón beach in Carboneras. Two hours later, another person called the Guardia Civil to report that a speedboat was approaching Los Muertos beach, which is in the same town but a few kilometres distant.
Several Guardia Civil officers were sent to the area. They discovered that the boat had returned to sea after dropping off a group of migrants on the coast. The officers were then able to recover the body of a man who had already died, despite the efforts of rescue personnel. His body was then transported to the Carboneras port. Another person with a significant leg injury was discovered on the beach and taken to an Almería hospital for treatment.
Both were on the boat with approximately twenty other individuals, including a minor. According to sources familiar with the matter, all were retrieved in apparent excellent health. One of them contacted emergency personnel at 3:00 p.m., owing to the assistance of a vehicle who discovered them on the AL-5106 road that runs across Los Muertos beach. Throughout the day, several boats were observed in the same coastal area, possibly transporting more migrants.
This morning, the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) confirmed a six-year prison term for a man who was convicted of captaining a fishing vessel transporting 40 Algerians, four of them were minors. In April 2024, a Portuguese patrol boat working with Frontex intercepted a vessel off the coast of Morrón de los Genoveses, in the municipality of Níjar. The vessel did not meet the minimum safety requirements for the 90 nautical mile journey between Algeria and Almería. There were 41 persons on board, including the man who was later arrested for captaining the boat.
