The reconstruction of Calle San Francisco, often known as Mushroom Street, will begin in early February and is expected to be completed by Easter. Councillors Cristina García (Infrastructure) and Lidia López (Commerce), along with the project’s technical manager and members of the Vox party (who reached the agreement to carry out this project), held a meeting with residents and business owners yesterday, Tuesday February 3rd, to explain the work schedule for this iconic street.
The modifications to Calle San Francisco will be completed in stages, commencing with the area closest to Calvo Sotelo. The first portion will connect to Calle Jerusalem, followed by Calle Navas, and finally Calle Pascual Blasco/Castaños. During the meeting, it was stated that the roadway would not be closed to traffic at any moment. Work will begin on the roadway in each portion, leaving the sidewalks clear, and then on one sidewalk, adding walkways to access businesses and apartment buildings, before moving on to the other.
Nerco Infraestructuras is in charge of the redevelopment work, which will include cleaning and repairing the pavement, painting the sidewalks and town centre, dismantling, restoring, and repairing the street features (ten mushroom-shaped structures and two playhouses), and replacing the children’s play equipment (two slides and a hopscotch court). The mushroom-shaped constructions will be disassembled and taken to workshops for refurbishment, while the playhouses will be fixed on the spot.
The council members agreed that “the works are planned to affect residents and businesses as little as possible because we are aware that it is a very busy street, but we are convinced that despite the occasional inconvenience the works may cause, they are worthwhile because they will improve the image of this essential thoroughfare for Alicante residents and visitors.”
In this regard, they said that “the action was a demand from residents and merchants with whom we have held meetings so that they could contribute their suggestions and needs and who will be kept informed throughout the weeks that the work lasts.”
