The Benidorm City Council will absorb the rise in the price of school bus tickets to the city’s secondary schools (IES) so that, until the end of the school year, pupils “continue paying the same amount as before for this service.” Maite Moreno, Councillor for Education, revealed on Tuesday, February 3rd, that the new urban transport tariffs imposed by the Regional Ministry have resulted in a ticket price rise of roughly 40 cents.
According to Moreno, “We considered it appropriate not to pass on this increase to the students and for the City Council itself to cover the difference between the previous and current prices.” For example, “Each student will continue to pay €0.54 per trip, while the City Council will cover the remaining €1.31, paying more than 70% of the total ticket price compared to the 66% it covered before the increase.”
According to the Councillor for Education, this action is expected to constitute “an extra investment of more than €20,000, in addition to the amount already allocated for the period from January to June.” The precise amount “will be known at the end of the school year, as it will vary depending on the number of trips actually made each month by the approximately 540 secondary, high school, and vocational training students who use the school transport service funded by the City Council.”
According to Moreno, “Due to a computer application error, the transport company has informed us that there may be a few days when students have to pay part of the fare increase, but they have assured us that, if this occurs, the situation will be rectified and regularised throughout this week.”
