The General Directorate of Public Health (DGSP) has declared a workplace measles outbreak among adults and employees of two enterprises that share a building in Alicante. Twenty-eight suspected cases have been analysed, with 16 confirmed positive, three negative, and nine currently being investigated.
Since the first suspected case was discovered, the Alicante Public Health Center and the DGSP have conducted an epidemiological study of potential cases in order to conduct relevant laboratory tests, identify contacts, and take appropriate actions, according to Ministry of Health sources.
Currently, Public Health has implemented all necessary precautions to prevent any infections. Specifically, all confirmed and under investigation cases have been isolated, and all contacts have received vaccinations.
Furthermore, the need of sufficient ventilation and the use of masks in the work environments of the organisations involved has been stressed.
Similarly, Public Health has written to the management of all health departments to give “essential” information on measles surveillance and epidemiological control.
The Ministry of Health cautions the public that measles is an acute contagious disease caused by a paramyxovirus virus, with symptoms including fever, maculopapular rash, cough, rhinitis, and/or conjunctivitis.
The clinical appearance of measles in vaccinated people is frequently atypical. “It is important to emphasise the importance of vaccination as the most effective measure for preventing this disease,” he told me.
