The National Police have arrested a 30-year-old male and a 36-year-old woman in Benidorm (Alicante) on suspicion of stealing expensive gold jewellery and a collection of high-end watches worth more than 65,000 euros from an elderly man’s residence.
The Alicante Police Station reported a robbery using the “cariñoso” stealing tactic in the city centre.
In this case, an eldery man was approached by a woman who began a discussion with him and, at one point, feigned to be ill. The older man then volunteered to accompany her to a neighbouring cafe. When they arrived, they started a chat and exchanged phone numbers.
That afternoon, the man received a call from the young woman, who recommended they meet in the same location. After meeting again, the woman, with a warm demeanour, persuaded the man to show her his house.
During their time together in the house, the now-detained woman insisted on seeing all of the rooms before leaving after a few hours, according to a police statement.
Escape via car
Two days later, the victim received multiple calls from the same woman, who showed a strong desire to meet again. After arranging to meet, the alleged culprit took advantage of a lapse in concentration to steal several precious gold jewellery items and a collection of high-end watches that the victim kept there. She then hurriedly left the house in a vehicle driven by another individual.
When the victim realised the jewellery, worth more than 65,000 euros, had been stolen, he went to the police station to file a complaint. An investigation was launched, and officers were able to identify the getaway vehicle used by the alleged perpetrators as well as the possible routes they took to evade police action.
They also heard about a woman’s arrest at the Benidorm police station for identical offences, whose physical attributes matched the suspect’s. The officers determined that she was the woman being investigated. They also tracked down and identified the second suspect in the city, and both were apprehended.
Following the completion of police proceedings, the inmates were sent up to Benidorm’s duty investigative courts.
