The Guardia Civil arrested a 74-year-old man for driving 20 kilometres in the wrong direction on the AP-7 motorway in Cartagena, risking the lives and physical integrity of other drivers. He had been arrested in Valencia three days previously for similar charges.
The event occurred in the early hours of the morning on the AP-7 motorway, which runs through the municipality of Cartagena, when the COTA Traffic Centre received many calls reporting that a vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction.
The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Group headquarters dispatched multiple patrols from the Cartagena Detachment to the locations specified in the calls to confirm the events and, if necessary, launch the appropriate response.
At kilometre 799 of the AP-7, travelling towards Alicante, Guardia Civil personnel noticed headlights ahead and began holding up traffic to restrict the speed of other road users, with the goal of minimising dangers. They safely intercepted the vehicle, which soon came to a rest on the motorway’s shoulder.
Specialists from the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Department then identified the driver of the vehicle that had been driving in the wrong direction for 20 kilometres and refused to take a breath test.
Civil Guard officials arrested the driver for two traffic offences: careless driving and refusing to take a breathalyser test.
During the investigation, the Guardia Civil revealed that the now-detained man had been arrested only three days before for driving the wrong way along a highway in Valencia.
