This week, the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) released a silver coin to mark the 2026 World Cup. The coin has the shape of Diego Armando Maradona’s famous goal against England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 Mexico World Cup on its back.
The organisation said in a statement, “The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) issued a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, whose main motif is a diagram of the legendary play of Argentina’s second goal against England in Mexico 1986, considered the best in the history of the World Cup.” It also said that next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada “will mark 40 years since that sporting milestone.”
The Argentine Central Bank took part in this program for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is similar to programs that have happened in other World Cups.
The statement said, “The design of this commemorative coin has a ball going through the coin in the middle, which is a metaphor for the love of football. The upper arch has the words República Argentina and the lower arch has the words Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026.”
The back side features a graphic depicting Maradona’s famous play, starting with the moment he gets the ball behind the halfway line and ending with the shot on goal after dribbling past four English players and keeper Peter Shilton.
That goal made the score 2-0 in the quarter-final encounter. It came after a disputed handball goal by the Argentine football hero, who is known as “The Hand of God” in Argentina. Gary Lineker’s consolation goal for England made the final score 2-1.
Argentina will beat Belgium in the semifinals and then Germany in the finals to win their second World Cup. They had also won the trophy at home in 1978.
The coin is 40 millimetres wide, 27 grammes heavy, and has a reeded edge. It is composed of 925 silver. The number of coins made for the domestic market is 2,500. The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) also said that gold coins with a similar design were made and will be sold around the world. They also said that the coins will have a symbolic worth of 10 Argentine pesos.
The Strategic Planning Management of the Treasury—Numismatic Issues Sub-management of the BCRA came up with the design, while the Royal Mint of Spain—National Mint and Stamp Factory made the coins.
