Alicante

Alicante is the administrative capital of the Alicante province and so the heart of the Costa Blanca.

The province is renowned for its beautiful coastline, known as the Costa Blanca, which features picturesque towns like Benidorm, Calpe, and Jávea. These coastal areas offer a wide range of activities, from swimming and sunbathing to water sports and hiking. Inland, the landscape is diverse, with mountains, valleys, and fertile plains, providing opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring charming villages.

Alicante’s history is rich and varied, with influences from Iberian, Roman, and Moorish cultures. This heritage is evident in the province’s architecture, cuisine, and traditions. The city of Alicante, the provincial capital, is home to the impressive Santa Bárbara Castle, which offers panoramic views of the city and coastline. Other historical sites include the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Elche Palm Grove, one of the largest in the world, and the ancient city of Lucentum, which dates back to the Roman era.

The province is also known for its lively festivals, such as the Bonfires of Saint John in Alicante and the Moors and Christians celebrations in various towns. These events showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage and provide visitors with a unique insight into local traditions.

Alicante’s cuisine is a highlight, with a focus on fresh seafood, rice dishes, and local produce. The province is also a significant wine producer, particularly known for its sweet Fondillón wine.

With its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, Alicante province offers a diverse and unforgettable experience for visitors.
