This past weekend, I swapped my usual beach walks for something a little different: an evening in Elche, exploring the breathtaking El Palmeral and taking in the sounds of the Elche Jazz Festival. It ended up being one of the most refreshing ways to end the weekend.
Even though El Palmeral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the biggest palm grove in Europe, seeing it in person was an unforgettable experience. The cares of the outside world seemed to melt away as soon as we entered the shaded pathways beneath the soft swaying of palm fronds.
Strolling through the Huerto del Cura, the grove’s most renowned section, was like entering a secret tropical garden. My fur babies absolutely loved sniffing their way through the leafy trails (on leads, of course!). We were able to locate some shady seats where we could relax and take it all in. A tranquil oasis inland from the hustle and bustle of the coast, this area is dog-friendly and features historic irrigation channels and the famous Imperial Palm.

As the day grew into night, the city was filled with the sound of music. We were unable to attend the performance due to a lack of tickets, but the delightful sounds of the Elche Jazz Festival filled the air with a welcoming Mediterranean atmosphere as we strolled around. You are simply invited to take a moment to listen and relax.
Although Elche lacks the beachfront views that characterise the majority of the Costa Blanca, it more than makes up for it with its unique blend of tranquilly and autnetic energy, a profound connection to nature, culture, and history.
If you’re seeking a more serene, verdant, and introspective weekend getaway, it’s the ideal spot for you. The fact that it is so dog-friendly also made the journey stress-free for everyone.

The ideal time to visit El Palmeral is in the morning, when the weather is cool, or, as we did, right before sunrise, when there is still a little breeze. Be sure to pack water for both you and your furry friends, if they’re coming along. It can get hot, particularly in the summer, but there are some fountains and shady spots. Additionally, it is highly recommended to review the Jazz Festival program in advance; certain performances are complimentary and held outdoors, making them perfect for families with pets.
I can’t speak highly enough of Elche if you call the Costa Blanca home or are planning a trip there soon. Elche is perfect for anyone seeking a beautiful, pet-friendly destination, whether they are nature lovers, culture seekers, or just looking for a getaway. Shade, music, and smiles made for a perfect Sunday evening, and we will definitely be returning again soon.
