So here we go again, Costa Blanca! The scent of sunscreen is fading, the beach bags have been packed (mostly), and the familiar rhythm of the school run has replaced the leisurely mornings of summer. For parents who live here, it’s a time of mixed emotions, where you breathe a sigh of relief for routine while also nostalgically recalling those long, lazy days. And let’s be honest: those long, lazy days often resulted in a lot more screen time for your children.
For many of us, summer is a free-for-all with tablets, phones, and gaming consoles. Your children are out of school, the weather is beautiful, and sometimes a little digital babysitting is all that’s required for a quiet coffee or a moment of peace. But now, as school bells ring and homework begins to pile up, I’m sure many of you, like me, are wondering if it’s time to hit the reset button on screen time.

I’m sure many of you have witnessed your own children’s transition from the endless summer scroll to the more structured demands of school life. When screens are managed, there is a noticeable difference in their focus, energy, and even their sleep. It’s not about being a ‘killjoy’; it’s about providing them with the best possible academic and emotional opportunities.
According to experts, excessive screen time, particularly passive screen time, can be detrimental. We are talking about things like:
- Shorter Attention Spans: It’s difficult to concentrate on a textbook after watching hours of fast-paced TikTok videos.
- Restless Nights: Blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production, causing sleepy children to stay awake.
- Impact on Mood: An observation of a clear link between excessive screen time and increased grumpiness or anxiety in the children.

So, now that school has resumed, I’ve looked into how parents have implemented this digital minefield. I’m going to share those with you in case any of them are of interest.
- The “Work First, Play Later” Rule: Homework, reading, and any chores get done before any recreational screen time is even considered. It could teach responsibility and priorities.
- Designated “No Screen” Zones and Times: Parents say their dinner table is sacred; no phones are permitted. Some people have discovered that setting aside a “power-down hour” before going to bed, during which all devices are turned off, improves sleep quality significantly.
- Lead by Example: This can be a difficult one, even I must admit! It’s difficult to tell your children to get off their tablets when you’re constantly scrolling through your own. I’m not even a parent yet,, but I’m trying to be more present by putting down my phone and engaging.
- Embrace Our Costa Blanca Lifestyle: A Secret Weapon! Instead of screens, you can encourage activities such as a walk down the promenade after school, a quick dip in the pool, or a trip to a nearby park. A bike ride along the coast, or joining a local sports club or after-school programme.
Other parents believe that finding the right balance is key. Kids today are growing up in a digital world, and screens aren’t going away anytime soon. However, for those of us who live on the Costa Blanca, there is a unique opportunity to combine the best of both worlds: teaching them responsible digital habits while also allowing them to fully experience the vibrant, active, and sun-soaked life that surrounds us.
