Who Was Saint Anthony?
Saint Anthony of the Desert is a Christian Saint traditionally associated with animals. Because of this connection, many churches choose his feast day in particular as an occasion to bless pets and other creatures, acknowledging the deep bond people share with animals of all kind, how beautiful!
A Celebration Unlike Any Other
While religious holidays like Christmas and Easter have become familiar and widespread, the celebration of Saint Anthony stands part of its joyful inclusivity and community spirit:
- Owners bring their pets which can be dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, farm animals, and more – to receive a blessing of both health and protection.
- These events attracts people from near and far, turning church courtyards and streets into lively gatherings filled with wagging tails, curious faces, and heartfelt devotion.
Unlike most other services which are restricted to human participants, the Blessing of the Animals invites all creatures big and small to be part of this sacred moment, as a reminder that faith and compassion extend beyond species.

Timing and Local Traditions
The celebration doesn’t happen at single fixed times, instead…
Mass times vary by parish, with different churches holding blessings across several days. Larger towns and cities often schedule multiple events, allowing families plenty of opportunities to be able to participate. Some communities tend to pair the blessing with festivals, food markets, and cultural activities, turning it into a broader neighbourhood celebration.
