The Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana has announced a plan for teamwork between two departments regarding early detection units that focus on students’ mental health in schools.
The Valencian Government has made a promise in the Valencian Plan for Mental Health and Addictions 2024-2027. The first goal of this plan is to support good mental health and avoid mental illness and addiction problems. Action 1.2 involves a promise to set up early detection units in schools. These units will help identify issues early, offer initial support, and provide advice for teachers when needed.
This applies to students in publicly funded non-university schools in the Valencian Community who are in one of these situations: they have a serious mental disorder, they have been treated in a high-level healthcare facility, or they show signs of a mental health issue.
If a teacher or staff member suspects or knows about a student’s mental health issues, they must report it to the school’s management and the guidance team. If the education steps needed require more expertise, we will start working together with early detection teams in schools.
These units have been released gradually since November. The first plan was for 56 jobs, divided like this: six in Castellón, 29 in Valencia, and 21 in Alicante. These workers are hired by each health department.
The Valencian Government places great importance on the mental health of children. Last December, 20 psychology experts joined these units to help support the educational centres impacted by the rains on October 29.
